SALT LAKE CITY — Money was the big topic today at the first formal meeting of Utah’s new Olympic Exploratory Committee. Governor Gary Herbert said the idea of hosting again in 2026 or 2030 is exciting, but they have a lot of decisions to make first.

“We’re going to have to put pencil to paper and figure out what it’s going to cost us. What’s the revenue stream,” Herbert said.

Right now the committee estimates the games will cost about 1.6 billion dollar, before adding in security costs. Fraser Bullock, COO of the 2002 Olympics said they hope to trim that down with sponsor ships and federal funds but it could be difficult if Utah goes for winter games right after Los Angeles hosts.
