PROVO — A Utah County hospital is focusing in on mother’s mental health, after they say too many women are overlooked after giving birth.
Jessie Ellis, manager of the case management team at Utah Valley Hospital, said they now ask all mothers to fill out a mental health survey before leaving the hospital.
“We’re catching anywhere between six and twelve mothers additional mothers every week that we weren’t historically seeing.”
Ellis said one in seven mothers battle postpartum mental health issues, but many still feel like they have to fight those issues alone. He said he hopes this policy will help break down the stigma around mental health and get more women the help they need.
