BYU research looks at what makes freeways safe

New research from BYU says freeways can be safer if they have certain things in common.

Things like fewer curves, well-separated medians, and wide paved shoulders.

And a look at the data found higher speed limits may not lead to more crashes on some freeways.

BYU statistics professor Matt Heaton says there were more crashes in the 60 to 65 mile per hour zones than in the 70 mile per hour zones.

They also found that distraction can be more than cell phone use.  The view in certain areas can lead to more crashes.
