Salt Lake City votes to fund 50 new officers
Dec 6, 2017, 10:34 AM
Salt Lake City neighborhoods should get new police officers sooner than expected.
A first group of new officers should be out patrolling in June
The Salt Lake City council approved a plan Tuesday night to double the number of new officers that had been requested. The chief wanted 27, and the council said they’ll fund 50.
It will mean a nearly 5 million dollar adjustment to the budget and then 4-point-5 million in ongoing revenue starting next year, and that will mean a tax increase for residents.
Residents say Operation Rio Grande has increased the homeless presence and crime in surrounding neighborhoods.
