SALT LAKE COUNTY – Utah Democrats supporting Mitt Romney?  This time, yes.

Prominent Democrats like Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams and State Senator Patrice Arent are taking aim at comments made by former Trump strategist Steve Bannon, saying the former Massachusetts governor hid behind his religion to avoid going to Vietnam.  McAdams tweeted that Bannon’s comments were “despicable and anti-religion.”  He added, Honor, integrity define both Mitt and our troops who served.”

Patrice Arent stated there is a growing need for civility in politics.

Utah Democratic Party Executive Alex Cragun has one question.  What was Bannon thinking?  “We don’t like that kind of conversation.  That’s not the way we handle our politics here.  We’re all about talking about talking about the issues and keeping to that.  A personal attack on somebody’s religion is not acceptable in Utah.”

Cragun calls Romney a “nice guy who cares about Utah,” adding that critics against Romney should stick to the issues.  “We may not agree with him on things, and if he gets the [Senate] nomination, one way or another we’ll be there to meet toe-to-toe on policy issues, but, this kind of thing is not a productive conversation,” he says.
