UPDATE: The victim is identified as 53-year-old Homero Lara-Chicato. Police believe he may have been trying to get to the bus when he was hit. The road was re-opened by 10:45 AM.

A man crossing Redwood Road was hit and killed early Friday.

It happened just before 7 a.m. near 6200 South. The man was taken to a local hospital in very critical condition but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Unified police detective Ken Hansen says he was not immediately sure if the man was in a crosswalk. Police were investigating reports from a least one witness that the man was using his cellphone as he was crossing the street.

Hansen said the man was hit by a northbound car in the center lane, and possibly thrown into the side of a stationary UTA bus.  UTA later said the investigation seemed to show that man may not have hit the bus after all, but the bus driver stayed on scene as a witness.

Detectives were expected to look at video from nearby Utah Department of Transportation surveillance cameras as part of their investigation.

All northbound lanes of Redwood Road starting at 7000 South and eastbound lanes of 6200 South were closed as detectives conducted their investigation. Hansen said Redwood Road was expected to be closed for a few hours and would likely tie up traffic in the area.
