A large gathering at the Utah State Capitol Wednesday night tried to encourage more young people to get more involved in politics and issues.
The ELI or Emerging Leaders Initiative gathered Utah millennials, college students and young professionals to teach them how to navigate the Legislature, how to lobby, affect public policy, write press releases, contact elected leaders, and more.
Bradley Smith with Young Professionals of Salt Lake City says millennials are very interested in what’s going on in the world and the issues that affect them.
But they need to get off the computer and know how to do something about it, he said.
ELI founder Aundrea Peterson agreed, saying these kinds of events give young people more tools. Right now young people may post on Facebook or sign online petitions, but they don’t get out and vote.
They say young people do care about a lot of world issues that they see as affecting them.
