WEST VALLEY CITY – Highway Patrol officials are left with more questions than answers, for now, as to what led up to a deadly crash on I-215’s west side.

Investigators say they can’t point to any one factor that led to Jared Lund’s vehicle veering from the northbound lanes of the freeway, hitting the barrier, launching over it and landing on 3500 South.  However, there are some things investigators believe they can rule out.  Lieutenant Todd Royce says, “Indicators show to us that there wasn’t excessive speed involved.”

Royce also says they don’t have any initial signs showing Lund was impaired, but, they haven’t officially ruled that out yet.  “Toxicology [reports] take a while.  It will take weeks,” Royce says.

Now, investigators will have to comb through Lund’s phone records to see if he was texting while driving.  Plus, they’ll have to pull the vehicle’s data recording device.   “[It’s] kind of like the black box of a vehicle.  [We’ll] look to see what was happening if the brakes were applied and if there were evasive maneuvers prior to that,” he says.
