East High holding $5 Prom for everyone

East High School wanted to see more students be able to attend dances. So this Saturday, Prom is all-inclusive and just 5 dollars.

Dozens of new and gently used donated dresses and ties hang carefully on racks in the corner of a classroom. Signs around school advertise the $5 Prom, and All-inclusive Prom.

Prom tickets, dresses, dinner, activities and more can get quite expensive. And 60 percent of students at East High are on free or reduced lunch. So student body leaders came up with this idea.

“We have always wanted to get more students to come to dances,” says Dalton Hoopes, a junior and student body officer.

Student body vice president and senior Ainu Kaufusi has been working on this with Hoopes and other student body leaders for weeks.

“We feel like Prom is something that needs to be enjoyed, rather than worry about the cost of it,” she said.

They estimate they’ve received around $10,000 worth of donated goods and services for this Saturday night. Le Bus will take students for free to City Creek Center for food, then to the Union Events Center for Saturday night. There’ll be a movie and snacks back at East High afterward.

The theme is night under the stars. They want students to have a safe sober and really fun time and feel like everyone can have this high school experience.
