SALT LAKE CITY — The nation’s report card shows Utah public school students are performing above average, but the state superintendent says it’s not good enough.
The Deseret News reports overall this is good news for our Utah schools — fourth- and eighth-graders in the state performed better in both math and reading compared with the national average, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress.
But Utah Superintendent Sydnee Dickson says it’s not good enough. She says there are still achievement gaps that haven’t improved.
The report shows large differences between Hispanic and white students’ performances, and low-income students underperformed.
“We will be working closely with our local school districts and charter schools to ensure every student has the knowledge and skills needed to ensure they have choices about their future,” Dickson said.
