SPANISH FORK – Months after he crashed into a fleeing shooting suspect, a Utah County sheriff’s deputy is back to work this week.
The suspect was tearing through Spanish Fork.
“He went through school zones, intersections with people in the crosswalks,” deputy Justin Mortensen said.
He then thought to himself, “This is going to end, and it’s going to end right here because he’s not getting on the freeway.”
Mortensen rammed Justin Llewelyn’s car, which led to the Herriman man’s arrest after a five-day manhunt in January.
Mortensen thought he had soft tissue damage following the crash near I-15.
“As a couple of weeks went by, it still wasn’t healing. It was still hurting,” he said. “So I went to a couple more doctors and they located a broken bone” in his hand.
Llewelyn told police he’d rather die than go back to jail. He is accused of shooting and wounding a homeowner and firing at two police officers.
