SANDY — The Canyons School District has announced it’s pulling lettuce from its cafeteria meals amid a nationwide E. coli outbreak.
Though there have been no cases of illness in Utah linked to the outbreak, Canyons officials say they’re erring on the side of caution.
The Canyons’ nutrition services department had ordered 54 cases of chopped lettuce and head lettuce for school menus, but that is being thrown out, district officials said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending no one eat any chopped or bagged romaine lettuce — especially grown in the Yuma, Arizona, region — until the outbreak is contained. So far, 35 cases of E. coli have been confirmed in 11 states, with eight of those cases in neighboring Idaho.
