SALT LAKE CITY — Weed-filled lawns have Utahns outside in their yards, fighting with nature — but gardening experts say this spring may be worse than past years.

A national landscaping group ranks Salt Lake City on its top ten worst list for spring weeds. The reason: a warm winter.

Utah State University horticulturist Taun Beddes, co-host of the KSL Greenhouse show, says dandelions are all over the place.

“I’ve been seeing a lot of dandelions out, which we do every year, but this year, I’ve been seeing lawns which I knew were treated last year, and there are dozens to hundreds in that lawn,” Beddes said.

Beddes says crabgrass and spotted spurge are also likely to be widespread because of the mild winter.

The National Association of Landscape Professionals ranked Salt Lake City ninth on its top ten list of the worst cities for weeds in 2018. Atlanta led the list.
