A California judge has struck down a city ordinance in Oakland that kept Utah coal out.
The Federal judge said the city failed to prove that handling and storing coal was a threat to the public.
In fact, he said the city’s record was full of inaccuracies and erroneous assumptions and faulty analysis.
A Carbon County commissioner says this is a victory for coal country jobs and the state of Utah, because now Utah can ship coal through Oakland’s port to Asia and beyond.
A terminal there could load up to 10 million tons of Utah coal a year.
Oakland officials still don’t want it. They say they are discussing their options.
