CLARKSTON, Cache County — Three bicyclists riding in a Multiple Sclerosis charity ride in Cache County were seriously injured after they were struck by a suspected drowsy driver.
It happened around 8 Saturday morning on State Road 142 near Clarkston during the “Bike MS: Harmons Best Dam Bike Ride.”
Utah Highway Patrol says the driver hit a husband and wife on a tandem bike, and another biker from behind.
By law motorists are required to give bikers at least 3 feet of space.
“Imagine if it was you on the bicycle. what would you want the motorist to do. Would you want them to give you space? Of course you would. We ask the motorist to have a little respect, give them a little courtesy, move over and give them the space that they deserve, by law they deserve to have that space,” said UHP Sgt Lawrence Hopper.
Police don’t believe their injuries are life threatening.
The Cache County Attorney is screening potential charges for the driver.
The ride continues tomorrow. Charity representatives say their primary concern is the safety of the participants and the well-being of those hurt. This year more than 1,000 cyclists are anticipated to ride 150 miles over the weekend, raising more than 1 million dollars.
