SALT LAKE CITY — The Transplant Games of America have converged on Salt Lake City with hundreds of athletes all with one thing in common: they’re all organ recipients or donors.
Organ recipients, donors, and their families are all competing in events around the valley. Opening Ceremonies are free tonight at Smith’s Ball Park.
“All of the participants have had a life-saving transplant; either a solid organ transplant, cornea transplant, or a tissue transplant,” Michelle McCardle Executive Director of the Salt Lake Transplant Games said.
“There are 21 competitions, everything from basketball, volleyball, pickleball, ballroom dancing. There’s a youth Olympiad,” McCardle said.
Tyshon Lewis and his family are in Salt Lake from Delaware competing for team Philadelphia after Tyshon had a heart transplant two years ago. He says he’s just grateful to be able to compete. He’ll compete in basketball and track and field events.
