HILL AIR FORCE BASE — Get ready for loud explosions in Utah’s west desert over the next few months.

Hill Air Force Base will be blowing up solid-rocket motors with aged propellant up to three times a week. The booms from the Utah Test and Training Range will last through the end of September.

Depending on winds and atmospheric conditions, the blasts from the west desert might be heard along the Wasatch Front.

A Hill spokeswoman says the detonations fulfill international treaties to reduce ballistic missiles.

She adds Hill has destroyed one million pounds of missile motor propellant in 20 years.
