SOUTH SALT LAKE — Investigators hope new exposure from KSL Newsradio’s Crimewatch and a $250,000 reward will help lead to information that solves the cold case murder of Sherry Black.
Black was killed in November 2010 in her bookstore at 3466 S. 700 E. in South Salt Lake. Her husband, Earl, is the one who discovered her body.
“She had been brutally beaten and murdered,” Rosie Rivera, Salt Lake County Sheriff says.
Rivera says the crime did not appear to be well-planned.
“There was no evidence of forced entry,” she says. “Nothing appeared to be missing.”
They were never able to identify a suspect or a person of interest.
Police believe the killer left a brown imitation Armani Exchange belt at the scene of the crime, though they don’t believe it was used in the murder.

Investigators were able to collect DNA, finger and palm prints as evidence and enter them into a database. Because of that DNA, they were more recently able to release a composite of what the suspect might look like, in hopes it would help lead to an arrest. The phenotype is not meant to represent an exact depiction, as there are variables within DNA.

Rivera believes someone out there knows what happened to Black and can help solve the case. She’s asking anyone with information to call Salt Lake County’s cold case detectives at 385-468-9816.
“I am committed to having all cold case homicides investigated until such time the killer or killers are identified, arrested and held responsible,” Rivera says.
Black was the mother-in-law of Greg Miller, the former CEO of the Utah Jazz. The Miller family is providing the $250,000 reward in the case.
