HERRIMAN — A small brush fire southwest of Herriman prompted a voluntary evacuation order for some residents, Unified Fire Authority officials said Saturday.

More than 400 homes were affected by that order. However, the evacuations were lifted by 8:30 p.m. as crews were able to get the flames at least 50% contained.

Investigators believe the fire was likely started by lightning during Friday night’s thunderstorms, but it wasn’t discovered until around 3 p.m. on Saturday, near 8028 W. Step Mountain Road.

Officials estimated between 5 and 7 acres burned up Rose Canyon by late Saturday afternoon, with winds potentially spreading the flames to cover more ground.
