PRICE — An animal hospital in Price is struggling to stay ahead of an outbreak of canine Parvovirus.
The Animal Hospital of Eastern Utah has seen 35 cases of Parvo in the last week. Ten dogs were brought in with the disease yesterday and half of them died.
“Parvo is a very dangerous disease in dogs,” says Veterinarian Dan Harmer. “It causes severe diarrhea and vomiting, and they often die of dehydration.”
With the animal hospital normally seeing one case every few weeks, Harmer believes there is a clear cause for the influx of dogs with Parvo.
“Just people not vaccinating dogs,” Harmer says.
“I’ve never seen a case of a dog getting Parvo that was fully vaccinated, but all of these were dogs that were not vaccinated,” he added.
Harver says nearly 90-percent of dogs with Parvo die if left untreated.
