MENDON, Cache County — One person died shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday in a car crash west of Logan.

The Utah Highway Patrol said a Chevrolet Blazer going southbound on State Route 23 ran a stop sign at the junction with State Route 30. The Blazer slammed into the passenger side of a Ford F-150 that was westbound on SR-30.

Two people were in the Blazer. The Highway Patrol said neither was wearing a seatbelt. The driver, Chad Scoffield, 53, was ejected from the Blazer and did not survive. Scoffield was from Brigham City.

The passenger in the Blazer was Shawn Burgess, 51, of Tremonton. Burgess was injured, but troopers did not believe those injuries were life-threatening.

Investigators said the driver of the F-150 was also taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.

Troopers believed alcohol might have played a role in the crash.

Labor Day weekend typically marks the end of what the Utah Highway Patrol and Utah Department of Transportation typically call the “100 deadliest days of summer.”
