HERRIMAN — Several homes are evacuated as a fire burns in the southwest corner of Herriman.

As of 6:30 p.m., the Red Cross was at Butterfield Elementary School to assist those displaced by the fire and several aircraft were dropping water from a nearby pond on the fire.

The fire is burning in an area known for larger homes on acre-sized lots. Fire officials say the size and severity of the fire has the potential to change minute by minute.

“This point, estimating around 20 acres, ” says Unified Fire spokesman Keith Garner while describing the size of the fire this afternoon. “There’s been a couple small outbuildings that have burned down.”

Significant amounts of white smoke could be seen in the air, and as many as 10 homes were indirectly threatened by the fire.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but officials are on scene.
