SPANISH FORK — Even with two wildfires raging nearby, the Nebo School District is keeping its doors open and classes going.
Campuses want things as normal as possible so kids keep learning.
“That’s why we continue to hold school,” said spokeswoman Lana Hiskey. “We have 33,000 students and (the fires) affecting 5,000 of those students that were absent.”
Hiskey says elementary campuses have rooms for parents to attend to their scared and tired children.
Buses are still running in pre-evacuation areas and principals are monitoring air quality.
“They don’t allow children to go outside if the air quality is in the red zone,” Hiskey said. “Parents also have that decision that, if they don’t want their children outside, please send a note with your child.”
Hiskey, herself an evacuee, tells parents to excuse their kids, and teachers to call for substitutes, as needed.
