Investigators say Brian Helton, 45, moved from Chicago to Layton to live with family friends in 2016, when the girl’s parents contacted police to accuse him of assaulting her while living with them.
Police say he fled, making his way first to Thailand, and then eventually, Japan.
Japanese officials alerted the U.S. Marshals Service through Interpol when Helton booked a flight from Japan to San Francisco. When he got off the plane, Marshals, the Department of Homeland Security and Border Patrol agents were waiting for him.
