SALT LAKE CITY — Investigators are looking for a cause of the house fire that killed a man in South Salt Lake at 2700 South and West Temple last night.

Crews were quickly able to put out the fire in minutes, but investigators say one person died at the hospital after suffering extensive burns.

“Usually, they succumb to smoke before the fire gets to them but it’s going to take an autopsy to tell that for sure,” said Fire Chief Ron Morris.

Morris said that they are looking for burn patterns and common causes at the home.

“Usually, you’ll find that there is some electrical wiring or there was a candle burning or something like that,” he added.

Three other occupants lived in the home but were not there at the time of the fire and are currently being housed in temporary housing thanks to the Red Cross.

Morris also spoke on the chances of rebuilding the home and potential options.

“A home like that, it’s probably going to be easier to just knock it over and start over again,” Morris said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
