SALT LAKE CITY — The defendant in a case involving three accusations of attempts to hire a hit man to kill her ex-husband, his new wife, and others involved in the case was sentenced to prison today.
In a dramatic and theatrical hearing today, Judge Paul Parker sentenced Linda Gillman, 70, to 3 years to life in prison for her part in a plot to hire her condo’s handyman to kill her ex-husband and his new wife.
The hearing began with Gillman’s attorney telling Judge Parker she no longer wanted her attorney to represent her.
When asked to explain why she no longer wanted his services, Gillman accused prosecutors and Judge Parker of ex-parte communication outside the courtroom about her case.
After repeating his question, Judge Parker asked Gillman to explain why her attorney needed to be dismissed.
Gillman told the judge her lawyer had not adequately prepared for the hearing, similar to accusations she made against as many as three other previous attorneys.
Judge Parker denied Gillman’s request to dismiss her lawyer and proceeded with the hearing.
Prosecutors and victims spoke about the long, drawn-out process of this case and how they were looking for closure.
Judge Parker said Gillman is a danger to the community, and that is why he gave her the 3-to-life sentence.
Gillman has 30 days to appeal her sentence.
