SALT LAKE CITY — Need a free or discounted ride on Election Day to get to the polls? The state says Uber and Lyft can give you one.

Utah’s Elections Office researched it, at Uber’s request, and found no reason the rideshare companies couldn’t offer the free or cheaper rides.

Elections Director Justin Lee addressed concerns that Uber or Lyft would be violating Utah code with the title “bribery in elections, paying for votes.”

The rideshares say they simply want to help people vote.

Utah was one of two states, plus Puerto Rico, that had a prohibition.
