SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake’s iconic Sugar House neighborhood could soon get a new police precinct to help boost officer presence in the area.
During a public meeting Tuesday, the city’s director of community and neighborhoods, in a slip of the tongue, mentioned Salt Lake City is looking to add a precinct in the area of 2100 South and 2100 East. Previously, that conversation had been happening behind closed doors.
Landon Clark, Sugar House Community Council Chairman, says everyone was caught off guard.
“I was shocked, actually,” Clark says. “We’ve been asking for a police presence for the last couple [of] years after the homeless resource center was announced.”
He added a new precinct house would be very welcome.
“I think an increased police presence will put more officers in the community, which is what they’re hoping for,” he says.
Clark specifically referenced the areas around the state liquor store, near 1100 East and Highland Drive, and Fairmont Park, located between 900 East and 1100 East on Sugarmont Avenue, as having an increase in traffic and crime in the past year.
