SYRACUSE — A Salt Lake City police officer is on leave after being accused of accessing child porn on his laptop.

According to a probable cause statement filed in the case, the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which operates within the Utah Attorney General’s office, found the images, some of which involved very young children, after spotting requests to download child pornography on Oct. 20, 2018. The request led them to an IP address at the home of Jonathan Isaac Dew in Syracuse.

The statement says agents found several different electronic devices were found in the home, including a silver HP laptop that was found in a closet inside a room that only Dew uses.  Links to three videos that included child porn were found on that laptop.

Dew’s wife and kids were reportedly home when agents arrived, and his wife told agents she thought the laptop was broken and didn’t know it still worked.

Agents tried to interview Dew while he was at work, but investigators say Dew asked for a lawyer after being read his Miranda rights.

Dew was booked into the Davis County Jail on suspicion of three counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.

The Salt Lake City Police Department issued a statement, saying, “The Salt Lake City Police Department placed an officer on administrative leave pending an open and active investigation by an outside agency. The officer was booked into jail November 7, shortly after 8 p.m. Salt Lake Police will be cooperating with investigating agencies in any manner necessary. An internal affairs investigation was opened immediately upon notification to our agency. The officer will remain on leave until the completion of these investigations.”
