OPINION: How to prevent sextortion on Fortnite

Cases of sextortion are rising as the popularity of Fortnite is increasing.

I love Fornite as much as the next guy, but people are taking advantage of the system to exploit kids and teenagers who are playing around the world. The creepers are finding kids on Fortnite. Then they are coercing kids to give them intimate pictures of themselves on a fake Instagram in exchange for tips on how to power up in the game. Once the scammers have the pictures, they then threaten to post the pictures unless the kids pay a ransom.

How can you keep your kids safe on Fortnite? Turn off the settings on your kids’ device, whether it’s a PC or an Xbox, so it doesn’t play online with other people. Also, have an open conversation with your teens about what is going on in Fortnite to make sure there are no red flags.
