MURRAY, Utah – The Utah Highway Patrol says a Kaysville police officer was hit by a car Tuesday morning while helping a trooper on I-15.

The officer was on a ride-along, when troopers were called about a wrong-way driver near 5300 South at around 2:30 or 2:45 AM. A northbound car going the wrong-way hit a southbound driver head-on.

Both drivers were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

While crews were removing the flares from the freeway in order to open the lanes, another vehicle came up to the scene and hit the officer in the road.

First reports said she was taken to the hospital with a leg injury but was alert and conscious at the scene.

“My understanding is she is in fair condition, with some injuries. She is able to speak, and she notified her family herself,” said UHP Corporal Zachary Gerrard.

Later, the department tweeted that the officer was doing well.

The lanes were closed until the 5 AM hour. The Murray Police Department is investigating whether the driver who hit the officer will face a citation or charges.
