SOUTH SALT LAKE CITY – For the first time publicly, the widow of fallen South Salt Lake police officer David Romrell is thanking the community, mourners and supporters of her family in a time of grief.
Elizabeth Romrell read a statement on Thursday from inside the police station where her husband worked.
She says her husband knew the moment he got there how special South Salt Lake was.
“I have felt the love and support that each of you has given us. I have seen many of you offer everything and anything you have to give, even though the deep pain of your own grief and sorrow. This has been the most challenging experience of my life,” Romrell told the gathering.
She also thanked members of her husband’s family, saying despite her grief, she never felt alone, and that her husband’s family constantly reminded her how much she was a part of the family.
It was there, near the intersection of 3300 South and 300 West, that Officer Romrell was killed, along with the driver of the car that hit him, a suspect in a burglary, on November 24th. Officer Romrell was laid to rest on December 5th.
Chief Jack Carruth also read a letter thanking the community, drafted by the family as seven members of Romrell’s family stood behind Carruth during the reading of the family’s statement of thanks.
