OPINION: Would you change your last name if it was “Trump?”

Would you change your last name if it was Trump? That’s what one family did for their child after he was bullied at his middle school because of his last name. For the record, the family is not related to Trump in any way, and yet he’s still being bullied. Is that the right way to handle bullying? Will the bullying really go away now?

No. Absolutely not. This isn’t the right way to handle the situation.

When I was a kid, I was bullied because I had a
speech impediment–I had a really hard time pronouncing my “s’s.” But once I got over my speech impediment, the kids still bullied me. Kids will do anything to belittle those around them.

The same will probably go for the kid who was bullied into changing his last name from Trump. Just because his name is going to be different, doesn’t mean the bullies will find another reason to pick on this kid.

On top of all of that, this is proof that we’re giving way too much power to bullies. The parents of the bullied kid should teach their child that these bullies can only tear you down if you allow them to. Bully is most toxic when we as parents don’t use it as a teaching moment.

What do you think? Was this the appropriate response?
