PROVO, Utah (AP) – Shoppers in Utah County soon will begin paying a quarter-cent sales tax for every $1 spent on taxable goods, excluding food, starting April 1.

The Utah County Commission on Tuesday voted to implement the fourth-quarter cent sales tax to fund roads and transit.

The tax is expected to generate about $22 million per year, with Utah County getting 100 percent of the tax proceeds before July 1, 2019.

After that, Utah County only receives 20 percent, while 40 percent will go to cities and 40 percent will go to the Utah Transit Authority.

The commission on Tuesday also decided that the tax must come back under review or sunset by the end of 2028.

Up until Tuesday’s vote, Utah County was the only county along the Wasatch Front to not impose the tax.
