Big Movie of the Week!

You could’ve flipped a coin to choose the big movie this week. With both Disney’s Mary Poppins, and DC’s Aquaman.

This week’s movie show tackled just that and had their listeners weigh in.

Both of these movies are sure to pull some serious numbers throughout the holidays and are both opening on over 4,000 screens.

“There’s a lot of things to consider here,” Said Steve Salles, “Mary Poppins opened early, and you’ve got Auquaman competing with last weeks big movie Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, and Bumblebee that’s coming out this week!”

Which means if you’re a fan of these big budget superhero sci-fi movies, your dollar is going to have to choose which screening to go and see. Or as Doug put it,

“The Nerd-ery is going Ahhh ahh ahhh! What do we go see!”

Marry Poppins Returns

Doug: 3 ½ stars

Steve: B

The first big movie the guys talked about was the reboot of everyone’s favorite umbrella wielding nanny Marry Poppins.

“This is a charming movie,” Doug said. “ I really like this, it pays homage to the first film in a lot of ways, including an appearacne of Dick Van Dyke, which was absolutely deligtful again as he reprised his role at the age of 92 when they shot this.”

With callbacks to some of the original music that we all fell in love with, plus adding a completly new score to set the scene as everyone has grown up and the kids that were looked after by Mary Poppins now need their own magical nanny to come back and help out.

“I felt like I had been taken back in time with this film,” Steve said, “ it had a classic feel, I think that Emily Blunt was a little more Nanny McPhee than Julie Andrews, but that’s in line with the P.L. Travers books.”

“Emily Blunt was just amazing in this role along with the whole crew.” Doug said, “I think the only thing that was missing was the Sherman Brothers music, which is a tough act to follow!

“I really liked Mary Poppins, but I didn’t walk out humming along to A Spoonful of Sugar, or Chim Chim Charee-ing or anyting like that but it’s a delightful little film!”

Steve also enjoyed the movie, just not as much as Doug.

“ I didn’t expect it to be bold and go off in some new direction, but I was expecting a little more differentiation from the original. It was beautifully shot, the score was gorgeous.

“I enoyed it. I just didn’t love it. I thought it was cute, but maybe it was just a little too reverential to the first film.”

Aquaman

Doug: 3 stars

Steve: B

The other monster film that’s released today is Auquaman.

This movie was visually awesome raved Doug. “We are so spoiled rotten, if 20 years ago we’d seen only 5 minutes of this move we would have been raving about it until the end of time! The way they moved under water and the way their hair flows, Amazing!”

This movie was nice and simple to follow, there’s a love story at the middle that really drives the whole conflict of the movie forward.

“This isn’t going to be an Academy Award winning movie, unless it’s up for some special effect awards,” Doug says, “But I was entertained by it.

“Sometimes the cheese just spills over and you kind of have to rollyour eyes, but I have to admit, I kinda got into this movie. “

“This movie should’ve been a summer blockbuster, I mean, watching this on an IMAX screen almost feels like you’re in an aquarium.” Said Steve.

“I liked both of these movies, but I didn’t love either of them!”
