Committee recommends changing Redmen mascot

CEDAR CITY — A Utah high school has gotten a recommendation to change their controversial mascot, the Redmen.

Cedar High has used “Redmen” for since the 1940s. The Cedar High School Mascot Committee voted Tuesday night to recommend to change it.

There are 24 people on the committee and secret balloting ended with a 17-7 decision.

The St George News reported they’ve had public meetings for the last two months, where most people spoke in favor of a change. But emailed comments had more people saying the mascot should stay the same.

The Spectrum says the local Cedar Paiute Tribe of Utah did not request a mascot change but tribe officials said they supported the review process.

Now the Iron County School Board will make a final decision. There’s no recommendation on a replacement mascot yet.
