New bill would allow running some red lights

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah lawmakers will consider a bill that would let drivers run red lights in certain circumstances.
HB 151 would allow drivers to go through a red light if it’s safe, with no other vehicles or pedestrians around. It only applies to roads less than 55 miles per hour, and the bill’s language says it would only be during a time of extremely low traffic levels.
This bill comes from West Jordan Representative Ken Ivory who, in 2018, tried something similar with HB 416, where you could proceed through a red light if you believed it was stuck or broken. That bill did not pass.
