SALT LAKE CITY – Some Utah lawmakers want to start a $1 million pilot program that would provide free train tickets during bad air days.
Salt Lake City State Representative Joel Briscoe says the program, which private companies could donate to, would also pay for public education campaigns to encourage people to work from home or carpool on those days.
Briscoe also hopes it gets the state to start discussing concrete clean air goals because Utah gets 17 red or orange days a year, which means the air quality is either unhealthy or unhealthy for sensitive groups.
The measure has not been officially introduced yet.
Governor Gary Herbert proposed $100 million in clean air programs last year.
