Hunger exists everywhere and has no boundaries. September is Hunger Action Month, and a group in Cache Valley is making sure school-age children in need are getting enough to eat.

The organization “Still Cool After School” fills backpacks with food for students to take home over the weekend. The backpacks contain items such as tuna and peanut butter as sources of protein; canned or fresh fruit and vegetables as sources of vitamins; and granola bars, cereal, and other healthy snacks for essential nutrients.

In order to protect their privacy, children discreetly take home an extra backpack filled with food each Friday. Kids then return the empty backpacks on Monday. Over one hundred backpacks are distributed each week through this powerful program.

During the week, these children are fed breakfast and lunch at school. As a result of this program they don’t have to experience a day without food.

SelectHealth recognizes the impactful contribution of Still Cool After School as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
