Congenital heart defects are one of the most common birth anomalies, affecting over 300 babies in Utah each year. One organization that was founded to support parents and families of children with heart defects is Camp Hawkins.
Located in Settlement Canyon near Tooele, Camp Hawkins is an overnight summer camp for these children and their siblings. Camp Hawkins provides a safe, structured arena for kids facing these challenges to be physically and socially active based on their abilities.
Camp Hawkins provides a safe place for these children to meet others with similar challenges, and enjoy activities tailored to their specific needs and capabilities. Campers can take part in activities such as hiking, swimming, music, arts, and crafts. They provide a trained volunteer staff and 24-hour on-site medical personnel.
Recognizing that many families of children with chronic health conditions face mounting medical bills, they charge only a nominal fee to attend camp and offer many scholarships based on need.
SelectHealth recognizes the positive life experiences provided by Camp Hawkins as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
