September 23rd is National Falls Prevention Awareness Day. Falls are the leading cause of injuries for seniors and can limit their ability to live independently. However, falling does not have to be a result of aging. Through simple lifestyle adjustments and prevention programs, the number of falls among seniors can be substantially reduced.
The Utah County Health Department offers a program called Stepping On. This program is proven to reduce falls and build confidence in aging adults. Stepping On is designed specifically for those at risk of falling, have a fear of falling, or who have fallen one or more times.
The program builds confidence in seniors’ ability to manage their health behaviors, reduce their risk of falls, and maintain active and fulfilling lives. The classes teach strength and balance exercises, how medications can contribute to falls, ways to stay safe when out in the community, and how to check your home for safety hazards.
SelectHealth recognizes the prevention effort provided by the Utah County Health Department as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
