October is domestic violence awareness month. One organization making a difference in Davis County is the Safe Harbor Crisis Center. They provide shelter, transitional housing, and supportive services to survivors of domestic violence. The organization also provides education, awareness, and resources to the local community.
Safe Harbor’s transitional housing provides an affordable place to stay and support services during a critical and dangerous time – when leaving the abuser. Domestic violence is a leading cause for homelessness in Utah. For many women, leaving an abuser means choosing homelessness for themselves and their children. The organization moves families away from violence to safety.
Those enrolled in transitional housing receive case management; complete classes on parenting, money management, and assertiveness; and are connected to community resources. Counseling and support groups for mothers and children help with the aftereffects of violence. This multilevel approach results in families successfully exiting the program to permanent housing separate from their abuser.
SelectHealth recognizes the critical resources provided by Safe Harbor Crisis Center as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
