According to the Utah Department of Health, suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 10-17 in Utah. Hope4Utah seeks to reduce the number of youth suicides in Utah by providing education, training, and support for suicide prevention, intervention, and post vention. Youth at risk for suicide are identified and directed to needed resources.
Hope4Utah provides training for how to talk to youth about suicide and methods for preventing bullying and self-destructive behavior. Their HOPE Squad program focuses on training students and advisors in peer-to-peer suicide intervention in over 170 secondary schools across the state. HOPE Squads are the eyes and ears of schools. Students are trained to recognize warning signs in depressed or suicidal peers, and empowered to report those signs to an adult.
So far more than 33,000 Utahns have been trained in suicide prevention and more than 1,000 students have been referred for help.
SelectHealth recognizes the prevention program provided by Hope4Utah as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
