In Utah, one in five children is unsure where his or her next meal will come from. To help, two Salt Lake County Library branches – Kearns and Magna – partnered with the Utah Food Bank on a nutrition program called Kids’ Café. It was developed to ensure that youth in their communities receive a meal each day Monday through Friday.
As a result of this program, thousands of kids have had an opportunity to eat. Many of the youth who are spending hours at library branches after school are doing so hungry, knowing that the hunger will not subside when they finally return home. It’s also hard for children to learn or behave appropriately with empty stomachs.
Salt Lake County Library Kids’ Café locations provide a safe place where youth can receive healthy nourishment. Staff are also able to connect children and their parents to other services that make a positive difference in their lives. Additional Kids’ Cafés are popping up at libraries across Salt Lake County. To find a participating library near you, visit slcolibrary.org or call (801) 943-4636.
