How can we assist those with disabilities achieve greater independence and enhance their living skills? One organization assisting in this area is the Utah Independent Living Center, a non–residential facility that has been providing services to enhance the independence of people with disabilities since 1982.
Their five core services include peer support, information and referral, independent living skills training, advocacy, and transition. They advocate and promote the public’s understanding, accommodation, and acceptance of their rights, needs and abilities.
Independent living is a rapidly growing consumer movement. Controlling one’s life, freedom of choice, and minimizing dependence on others are central themes in this effort. Thus, consumers always have a say in the services they receive.
The Center is committed to providing services needed by people with disabilities to function more independently in their families and integrate into their communities.
SelectHealth recognizes the life skill services provided by the Utah Independent Living Center as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
