The Opioid Community Collaborative or the OCC is a partnership between Intermountain Healthcare and public and private organizations. Together, they focus on community awareness, safe use, storage, disposal of medications, and effective treatment of opioid use disorders. More than 2,400 Intermountain employees have been trained about the consequences of opioid misuse. Naloxone, a life-saving medication that temporarily reverses the effects of opioids, is available without prescription in all twenty-one Intermountain Healthcare community pharmacies. Through this collaboration, over 15,000 pounds of medications were disposed of in community medication drop boxes over a two-year period. Intermountain Healthcare is participating in a three-year demonstration project to test the effectiveness of medication-assisted treatment combined with counseling. In fifteen months, the OCC project has seen an 85 percent abstinence rate for those who received medication-assisted treatment and counseling. You can help curb the availability of unused opioids by using medication drop boxes. SelectHealth recognizes the positive outreach efforts by the Opioid Community Collaborative as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
