BLUFFDALE – A moderate earthquake that shook the Wasatch Front was at fault for waking residents early Saturday.
The USGS confirms that a 3.1 magnitude quake originating beneath Bluffdale sent out a seismic wave that was felt from West Valley to Lehi.
The Saturday morning shaking was the 103rd identified seismic event in the Bluffdale area since Feb. 13.
The largest quake was the 3.7 mainshock on Feb. 15 at 5:09 a.m. There were thirteen seimicities prior to the 3.7 quake that are considered to be foreshocks.
The University of Utah Seismograph Stations says that “every earthquake that occurs has a small, roughly one-in twenty, chance of being a foreshock to a larger earthquake within five days.”
The Red Cross recommends the drop, cover, and hold on method for safety during a tremor.
Smoke alarms and sprinkler systems can go off during a tremor, even if there is no fire.
For a safe location during a quake, doorways are not stronger for any other part of a home structure, according to the Red Cross. Sturdy desks and tables are safe spots in a typical room.
After a catastrophic earthquake, the president can sign a major disaster declaration. If this happens, the federal government can offer home repair loans.
Homeowners and renters should be aware that most insurance policies do not cover damage from quakes. An earthquake-specific insurance policy would be needed to receive assistance from an insurance company.
FEMA disaster grants max out at less than $35,000.
The federal government can also assist in recovery with small business loans and agricultural business loans.
Recent shaking serves as reminder that Utah is an earthquake-prone region and a large quake could occur at any time.
