SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah’s head football coach is staying put. Kyle Whittingham has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the U. through 2023, the school’s athletic director said.

In a statement, AD Mark Harlan wrote that keeping Whittingham on the job has been a top priority for him from his first day.

“Coach Whittingham is one of the top coaches in college football and extending his contract was a high priority in my first year here,” Harlan said. “Kyle’s teams compete for championships on the field and in the classroom, and his loyalty to the University of Utah has made this a great partnership.”

Whittingham is the third-longest tenured coach in college football as he enters his 15th season as the head coach at the University of Utah. He is also the school’s and the Pac-12’s longest-tenured head coach.
