SALT LAKE CITY — Police say a suspicious package that shut down 300 West for a time Wednesday morning was actually an old record player.

The road was closed from 100 South to South Temple after the call came in at about 9:17 AM about the cardboard box left in the middle of the block, with no one around it. The bomb squad x-rayed it and took other precautions.

By 10:40 or so, Salt Lake City Police had an update for media:

“The package is clear; it was about a ’60s to ’70s era phonograph that was in the package,” said Detective Jess Perea.

They don’t know who the record player belonged to, or why it was left on the ground.

“Somebody just happened to be walking down the street with one, and he set it down and forgot it,” he said.  “If it can be returned, it will be returned.”
