PROVO — BYU Law students presented their Muslim classmates with flowers and expressions of solidarity at the Orem Islamic Center on Saturday night.
In response to the mass shooting at two New Zealand mosques on Friday, the law students expressed their sympathy and love for classmates Farah Odebat and Abdelrahman Al-Nusairat, who are seeking their L.L.M. degrees at BYU.
Students also “heart attacked” the Islamic Center’s front door, plastering it with paper hearts and notes of support.
“BYU Law prays for the Muslim victims and their families in New Zealand,” wrote law student Camille Bailey. “We pray for our classmates Abdelrahman and Farah and Cekli, whose hearts must be broken from this news. We pray for the end of this insanity.”
The students participated in a prayer led by Dr. Abdus Samad, a Fullbright Scholar and UVU professor who sits on the Orem Islamic Center board. Samad highlighted the many similarities between Muslim and Christian beliefs, emphasizing both faiths’ love of peace.
“Together, we can build a peaceful nation,” Samad said.
